Kenya: West Pokot Promotes Fish Farming

Posted on : Tuesday, 22nd September 2015

More than 100 fish farmers in West Pokot county have received 1,000 fingerlings.

The project aims to encourage residents to eat fish.

Speaking to the Star in his Kapenguria town office yesterday, county deputy fisheries officer Jackson Limang'ura said the last group of farmers will receive theirs next Monday.

He said an hatchery is under construction to reduce the cost of transporting the fingerlings from Sagana.

Limang'ura said farmers earned more than Sh3 million from the sale of fish in 2014 after harvesting 20 tonnes.

"Fish farming is an income-generating project, which does not require high capital to start. I encourage farmers to join the venture as it is viable in the county," he said.

The Fisheries department, which was started in 2013, has been organising seminars and running campaigns to popularise fish.
